Active Directory

If GC down, will there any impact?

If a Global Catalog (GC) server goes down, there can be some impact depending on the specific configuration and usage of the environment.

The Global Catalog is a distributed data repository that contains a subset of all the objects in the Active Directory forest. The GC stores a partial replica of all objects in the forest, including attributes that are commonly used in searches and queries, such as user name, email address, and group membership.

Some of the potential impacts of a GC server going down include:

  1. Authentication delays: If the GC server that a client is using for authentication goes down, the client may experience delays in the authentication process, as the client needs to locate another available GC server to complete the authentication process.
  2. Slow search queries: If the GC server that a query is directed to goes down, the query may need to be redirected to another GC server, which can result in slower query response times.
  3. Incomplete search results: If the GC server that is relied upon for a specific search query goes down, the search results may be incomplete because the GC does not contain a complete replica of all objects in the forest.
  4. Replication delays: If the GC server that is responsible for replicating directory changes goes down, there can be delays in the replication process, which can result in inconsistent or outdated directory information.

In general, it is recommended to have multiple GC servers in a domain to provide redundancy and minimize the impact of a GC server going down. By having multiple GC servers, clients and queries can be directed to an available GC server, which can help to ensure that authentication and search queries continue to function without interruption.
