Windows Server 2016 is a server operating system developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems, developed concurrently with Windows 10. The first early preview version (Technical Preview) became available on 1 October 2014 together with the first technical preview of System Center.

Windows Server 2016 was released on 26 September 2016 at Microsoft’s Ignite conference and became generally available on 12 October 2016. It has two successors: Windows Server 2019, and the Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel, which excludes the graphical user interface and many older components.

  • Software defined networking (SDN)
  • Storage space direct
  • Storage replica
  • AD support for privileged access management (PAM), support for Azure AD Join, along with support for Microsoft Passport.
  • Improvement in ADDS, ADCS, ADFS and Web Application Proxy. 

Installation Options:

  • Server Core: This is the recommended installation option. It’s a smaller installation that includes the core components of Windows Server and supports all server roles but does not include a local GUI. It is used for “headless” deployments which are managed remotely via PowerShell or other server management tools.
  • Server with Desktop Experience: This is the complete installation and includes a full graphical user interface (GUI) for customers who prefer this option.
