Active Directory

Can we keep Sysol or net logon folder as default? in c drive?

In general, it is not recommended to keep the Sysvol or Netlogon folders on the system drive (usually the C: drive) of a domain controller. The Sysvol folder contains Group Policy settings and scripts, while the Netlogon folder contains scripts and other files used during the domain login process. Both folders are critical for the operation of Active Directory and should be located on a separate volume or disk for performance and security reasons.

Here are some reasons why it is not recommended to keep the Sysvol or Netlogon folders on the system drive:

  1. Performance: The Sysvol and Netlogon folders can grow quite large over time, which can impact the performance of the system drive. By moving these folders to a separate volume or disk, you can reduce the load on the system drive and improve overall performance.
  2. Security: Keeping critical files like the Sysvol and Netlogon folders on the system drive increases the risk of data loss or corruption in case of a system failure or malware attack. By storing these files on a separate volume or disk, you can reduce the risk of data loss and improve the security of your AD environment.
  3. Backup and recovery: When you back up the system drive, you may also back up the Sysvol and Netlogon folders, which can increase the size and complexity of your backups. By storing these folders on a separate volume or disk, you can simplify your backup and recovery processes.

Therefore, it is recommended to store the Sysvol and Netlogon folders on a separate volume or disk, and not on the system drive. If you need to move these folders to a new location, you can use the “dfsutil” command-line utility or the “Active Directory Sites and Services” console to perform the move.
