How to verify that DNS scavenging is working?

To verify that DNS scavenging is working, you can use the following steps:

• Open the DNS Manager on the DNS server. To do this, click the Start button and select Administrative Tools, then select DNS.
• In the DNS Manager, right-click on the DNS zone where scavenging is being configured and select Properties.
• In the Properties window, select the “Aging” tab.
• Check the “Scavenge stale resource records” box if it is not already checked.
• Set the scavenging period to a value that is less than the Time-to-Live (TTL) value of the DNS records in the zone. The default value is 7 days.
• Click OK to save the changes.
• Wait for the scavenging period to elapse. Once the scavenging period has elapsed, the DNS server will attempt to scavenge stale DNS records from the zone automatically.
• Check the DNS server logs for events related to DNS scavenging. In particular, look for events with Event ID 2501, which indicate that DNS scavenging has run and that stale DNS records have been removed from the cache.
• Verify that stale DNS records have been removed from the zone. To do this, you can use the DNS Manager to view the DNS records in the zone. Stale DNS records should be removed automatically by the DNS scavenging process.

If DNS scavenging is working correctly, you should see Event ID 2501 events in the DNS server logs at the appropriate intervals, and stale DNS records should be removed from the zone automatically. If you do not see these events or stale DNS records are not being removed, it may be necessary to troubleshoot DNS scavenging issues, such as incorrect scavenging settings or permissions issues.
