How to Extend C drive in Windows 10

You may notice a Low Disc Space warning on the C drive after using a Windows-installed machine for a while. For users like game testers, editors, and designers whose jobs depend on computers, it is a serious problem. In addition to transferring projects to another drive, performing disc cleanup, and other methods to clear up space on C drive, you can also attempt expanding C drive to resolve the issue.

Disk Management in Windows 10 can’t always help you to extend system partition successfully. Because the function of Extend Volume is only available when there is unallocated space next to C drive, otherwise the button will gray out. Furthermore, you aren’t allowed to move partition with Disk Management in Windows 10 therefore, if you can’t satisfy the precondition, it is impossible for you to extend C partition.

You might be wondering how to expand the C drive in Windows 10 right now. By following the steps below, you will successfully learn how to expand a partition in Windows 10, specifically to increase the volume of the C drive.

Please follow below steps to extend C drive: –

Before making any changes to your disk partitions, it’s always a good idea to back up your important files and data to prevent any data loss in case something goes wrong during the process.

You can only extend the unallocated space behind the C drive in Windows 10/11 Disc Management.
  • Press Windows + R at the same time to open Run dialogue.
  • Type diskmgmt.msc and hit Enter to open Disk Management.

  •  Click on Ok, Disk management console will be opened.

  • Right-click C drive and choose “Extend Volume”.

  • Follow the prompts that will appear to complete this operation.

  • Now C drive has been extended.

Note: If the unallocated space is not available to the C drive on its right side, the “Extend Volume” will grey out and cannot be clickable.
