Limit the GPO Versions Stored

Every managed Group Policy object (GPO) is kept in the archive on the AGPM Server by default in all of its versions. However, you may set a limit on the number of versions kept for each GPO, and when that limit is reached, earlier versions are deleted. When GPO versions are deleted, the GPO version itself is removed from the archive, but a record of the version is kept in the GPO’s history. To finish this process, you must have a user account with the Advanced Group Policy Management (AGPM) Administrator (Full Control) role or the requisite permissions. Review the information in “Additional considerations” under this heading.

To limit the number of GPO versions stored

• In the Group Policy Management Console tree, click Change Control in the forest and domain in which you want to manage GPOs.
• In the details pane, click the AGPM Server tab.
• Select the Delete old versions of each GPO from the archive check box and type the maximum number of GPO versions to store for each GPO, not including the current version. To retain only the current version, enter 0. The maximum must be no greater than 999.
  Important
  Only GPO versions displayed on the Unique Versions tab of the History.
• Click the Apply button.

Additional considerations

• To do this process, you must by default be an AGPM Administrator (Full Control). You need to have the domain’s List Contents and Modify Options rights, specifically.
• By designating a GPO version as ineligible for deletion in the history, you may stop it from being removed. To accomplish this, right-click the desired version in the GPO’s history and select Do Not Delete.
