How to Remove Windows From Mac

How to Remove Windows From Mac

Some users install Windows on their Mac to run both OS on one device. But, there are plenty of reasons why having the secondary operating system alongside macOS is not suggested. It may charge you extra associated costs, such as the purchasing cost of a Windows license.

Moreover, it exposes the partition to virus and malware risks and also reduces the amount of drive space. Thus, it is important to learn how to remove Windows from Mac. So, keep reading.

Use Boot Camp for Intel-Based Mac

Have you created a partition or installed Windows using Boot Camp on your Intel-based Mac? Do you no longer want the Windows operating system and wish to remove it? Use Boot Camp Assistant.

Start your system and back all the crucial data stored on your Windows partition. This is because removing the partition will also delete stored data permanently. Close currently open apps and log out any other users. Launch Boot Camp Assistant and hit Continue.

Choose the option “Remove Windows 10 or later version” and now click Continue. Select ‘Restore’ if your device has a single internal disk or ‘Windows disk’ if your Mac has multiple internal disks.

Use Disk Utility

Even though Boot Camp Assistant is the easiest option, you can uninstall the Windows OS from Mac without it. First, log in to your macOS. Now, open Disk Utility by finding it on “Finder” under applications. Alternatively, you can open Launchpad and go to ‘Other’.

After opening the Disk Utility window, you will see the complete partitions on the left. The partition will be named BOOTCAMP if you use the Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows. Choose Windows OS partition and hit Erase.

Boot the Mac into macOS Recovery Mode and try this method again if the Erase option is grayed out. Back up your data before doing this. Now, merge both partitions by clicking and dragging the corner of the partition you want to keep over the removed one.

Use Terminal App

Using Terminal is highly useful if some of your Mac programs become unresponsive. It will help in taking complete and quick control of your OS and making the required changes. All you need to do is enter certain command lines.

Alongside deleting Windows from Mac, you can also change a directory, force quit an app, and reset the Mac password. Open the Terminal app through Spotlight and enter the command “diskutil list”.

Now, you’ll see a list of disks and partitions. Find the disk name and Windows partition you wish to delete under the IDENTIFIER column. After replacing the name, submit the password and click Action.

Tips to Manage Your Data & Security

#1 – Organize Files on Mac

After spending hours removing Windows from Mac, managing files for storage optimization is one of the best ideas. Make minor adjustments to your workflow to search and delete duplicate files.

Use iCloud Drive to organize your files into folders and sync them across multiple devices. Merge similar folders to avoid overwriting files and losing important content. Create a file naming system or use the native Mac tags to assign your files a specific tag.

#2 – Safeguard Devices From Ransomware

You’ve learned how to remove Windows from Mac and are ready to implement them because Mac is more secure than Windows. Apple offers a lot for improved security of Mac devices, but in some cases, it can suffer from ransomware.

Therefore, it’s advised to use ransomware removal and protection tools for Macs. Alternatively, update macOS client and server OSes, physically and logically lock your device, and keep a good backup system.

How to Confirm Successful Windows Removal?

After removing the Windows from Mac, you’ll receive corresponding messages for successful deletion. But, to ensure that Windows has been removed thoroughly, go to Disk Utility and click View and Show All Devices.

If deleted, the operating system will not appear there. You can also check it by clicking the Apple logo. Go to ‘About this Mac’ and then click Storage. The previous BOOTCAMP partition will not appear there once you delete it.

Troubleshoot Issues Associated With Windows Removal

While deleting or removing Windows from Mac, you might encounter certain issues. If you’re dealing with a Disk Utility problem, then go for a recovery reboot. Restart your system and press and hold the Command and R while it is rebooting.

Another method you can opt for is reformatting the Windows partition. After clicking on Erase, you’ll see a dialogue. Hit the dropdown menu for the scheme and select MS-DOS (FAT). If these solutions do not work in troubleshooting the issues, then contact the Apple Support team.

The Conclusion

If you’re lacking the drive space on a Mac that also has a Windows OS partition, then delete this OS from your device. This is recommended if you no longer need to work on the Windows operating system.
